Face-lift literarly means suspension of the face by means of sutures. It targets problems of the forehead, upper and lower facial areas, as well as the neck. Since there could be several areas of problematic, wrinkled, saggy skin, we may operate on different areas in one sitting. However, as this type of procedure lasts several hours, we tend to handle these areas separately.

Patients who turn to us will not voice concrete problems but feel their skin crumbled and will say "Doctor, recently I've become slightly older." Very common is the sloutching of the oral-nasal fold, resultin in a somewhat "bitter" facial expression. This can be corrected very nicely. This too is among a group of problems which do not necessarily follow the ageing process: In some, the line may be deep as early as thirty five while in others, it may not be noticable even in the fifties. Wrinkling process for that matter is a question of physique but with with advancing age, loss of tissue turgor is unavoidable. In this case, the stretched skin will appear as an excess. We frequently operate on the forehead, which may bear both horizontal as well as longitudinal wrinkles, the neck, where excessive fat too, may need to be removed via suction. Face-lift may be tied together with blepharoplasty (surgery of the eyelids).New surgical techniques allow for operation not only of the facial skin but of the underlying structures as well with longer lasting results. Therefore, instead of needing four-five procedures in a lifetime, as was common in the United States, two or three may suffice for the same results. This also means that a face-lift may later be repeated if indicated. After surgery, obviously, the tissues will start to weaken with time but the operated skin will age less visibly since it has matted down.To describe the procedure using common terms, we can say: "that in the course of the face-lift, the skin has to be pulled back, excessive skin has to be excised, and the tightened skin has to be sutured." If we consider as base the most common type, the middle area of the face, we can say that the incision is nearly invisible. It originates at the hairy scalp, goes down the upper ear, inside the ear, and curves around the earlobe. Since the incision inside the ear is conceled, the scar will bearly be visible. This approach is seldom down outside our Clinic as it is very maticulous and time consuming. For a few days special support has to be worn, either a factory-made bandage, or an elastic dressing. Suture removal is after a week but if self-absorbing sutures are used this may not be necessary. Healing process may take one to several weeks, individually depending. Having good blood supply, facial wounds heal well and fast, only one thing is important: direct sunlight must be avoided. Face-lift procedure does not require alteration of life-style, contrary to popular opinion, will not result in a change of mimicry or facial expressions but rather a younger, more relaxed look.Int he United Staes this procedure is requested as often by men as by women. A man int he light of public appearance or with increased self-esteem may very well opt for this procedure. One factor, both in men and women, which can adversely affect the success of the operation is smoking. Since the circulation is compromised the healin process is slower. Those who smoke, therefore, should quit the habit for weeks to months before the surgery. Permanetly quitting is advisable since the surgery does not "stop" the biological clock, merely slows it down. The operation as always is preceeded by an examination. Also important, it has to be done outside of the menstruational period !!!After facial surgery, the facial areas may swell, tighten, with bruising at certain spots. These signs generally will disappear after ten to fourteen weeks after the procedure.
