Otoplasty (plastic surgery of the ear)

Otoplasty is a surprisingly common procedure in every age group, especially among young adults. Frequently parents of under eighteen year olds, especially of young children with markedly deviating ears, will ask for itt to avoid humilitation, teasing, and to facilitate the child's peer adjustment.Among the ladies, assymetrical ears may limit choice of hairstyle, and compromise otherwise attractive, pleasant facial features.The solution is most commonly performed under local anesthesia.Small children may be put to sleep so that they will not have remaining unpleasant memories.In the course of the surgery, we operate on the offending ear cartilage and the skin that covrers it. Predominantly, unless otherwise indicated, we opt not to change genetically determined features. Hopefully, the patient will not ask for it. The surgical site is hidden behind the ear, an earsupportive band must be worn for a week after which sutures are removed.
